LEAD TO SOLVE PROBLEMS

1 Act to Lead

  • Flexibility:
    • Effective leaders function well in many types of organizations and groups.
  • Group & Community Members, need to know:
    • what a leader does to be helpful.
    • how to compare both actions as leaders against a list of possible leadership actions.
  • Groups need leaders.
  • The intent and actions of leaders influence a group's future action and the amount of satisfaction felt by group members.
  • All leadership roles give and get information in a community.

2 Get Satisfaction

  • All leaders encounter resistance to their attempts to lead.
  • Few leaders get any formal leadership training.
  • A leader improves his/her chances of success if he/she knows what leadership style to use under what situation.
    • A leader must repeat the useful actions before he/she is sure the action will get a helpful result.
  • An effective leader = satisfied group members.

3 Share the Problems

  • The word "problem" is a word to get satisfactory changes for involved members.
  • A group member will accept change, when he/she gets to share in the decision to change and to decide how he/sher will change his/her actions.
  • A group will accept change, when the members share in the decision to change.
    • Then, the group members get to decide how they will change their actions.
    • If one group member decides to change his/her actions from useless to useful then the group will act in a more useful manner.
  • Useful actions for a group member:
    • Listen with understanding and re-state the problems.
    • Help the group make choices.
    • Review the rules to define what to do.
      • The options for what not to do are often large.
    • Trust the group to act without a decision from only the leader.
    • Talk openly and honestly.
    • Identify the useful action(s) by others.
  • When a group member uses the above action(s) then the their will be increased cooperation.
    • Members will feel a need to change & grow.
  • To lead an individual must know both how member:
    • feel about work
    • think about work
  • If a leader:
    • avoids group members' feelings and only cares about how he/she thinks then he/she diminishes the group member's actions and the results of everyone.
    • uses power to win conflicts then he/she diminishes the satisfaction of the group.
    • permits a group member to win at his/her expense then the leader diminishes the group satisfaction.
  • The challenge:
    • is not to be tough of soft
    • is to assertively resolve conflict so every group member gets some their needs satisfied.
    • Result = exchange of benefits.

4 Share the Solutions

  • Define the useful actions of a leader.
  • Leaders need a place to practice the action.
  • A leader must confront him/herself regarding his/her power and authority.
  • As a leader, I can punish or reward the members of my group.
  • A leader must use a balance of rewards vs. limit setting to use his/her ability to effectively influence the group members.
  • Influence without power.
  • Members want:
    • trust and respect
    • a voice in their lives
    • no coercion
    • the right to achieve self respect in their work
    • meaningful and rewarding work
  • Apathy and anger increase when the above needs are not satisfied.
  • If a Leader Wants to Influence:
    • prepare to be influenced.
    • need to listen and send 'I messages'.
    • discuss our purpose, question, and solution statements in an honest and open manner.
  • Useful actions:
    • by our leaders solve problems in our group.
    • get helpful results for our community.
    • tap the creative genius of our society.
  • The leadership title does not mean the leader knows how to act as a useful leader.
  • As a Leader:
    • I must influence the actions of my group members and get accepted.
    • I can expect problems that I would prefer to avoid.
    • I may anger group members for different reasons.
    • If I am promoted from within, I may see changes in my relationship with former friends.
    • Some may now avoid and exclude me from their activities.
