1 Expect Resistance:

  • In a leadership role expect:
    • members may not be open and stop sharing their problems.
    • resistance to initiatives.
    • change in relationships with other group members.
    • help to overcome suspicion, distrust, and anger.
    • members to repeat patterns of learned negative responses.
    • resistance to authority may be useful.
      • The resistance that worked is repeated.
    • Resistance may repeat independent of the situation.
  • Actions related to resistance:
    • Defy, rebel
    • Resent, feel anger
    • Retaliate, strike back, diminish the authority
    • Lie, hide feelings
    • Blame others, tattle, cheat
    • Dominate, boss, bully those with less power
    • Need to win, hate to lose, perfect
    • Form alliances, organize against the authority
    • Submit, obey, comply
    • Court favor, butter up the authority
    • Conform, fear trying something new
    • Require assurance of success beyond reason
    • Depend on authority solely to decide
    • Withdraw, escape, fantasize, regress
    • Get sick
    • Cry
  • Facilitate problem solving when to help members move beyond repeating patterns of resistance.
    • Help members influence their environment in a positive manner.
    • Encourage change by using accurate information.
    • Do not punish members to act "normal".

 

2 Earn Trust

  • Results of Power Abuse:
    • Group members:
      • expect the new leader to abuse power.
      • resist leadership.
    • The above should not prevent a new leader from leading a group.
    • The above should stand as a problem statement to embrace and clarify possible solution statements.
  • An individual who has the title of a leader earns the respect and trust of the group members. by helping them solve their problems.

 

3 Find Followers

  • A leader must find individuals willing to accept:
    • influence
    • guidance
    • direction
  • The leader must listen to their struggles to satisfy their needs.
  • Individuals will follow leaders who can meet their expected needs.
  • Individuals can identify and describe the critical attitudes, actions, and rules required to meet their needs.
  • Individuals know what a leader must do to earn and retain their respect and trust.
